Much of Kittery’s history is based around its most prominent feature, the ocean! English settlement around the natural harbor began in around 1623. By the year of 1632, the colonists were protected by Fort William and Mary (now on the New Hampshire side of the Piscataqua River), and later Fort McClary. Kittery was officially incorporated in 1647, and is known as the “oldest incorporated town in Maine”. With such proximity to Portsmouth, Kittery became known for trade and shipbuilding. In fact, the first commissioned ships of the US Navy were constructed on Badger’s Island and used in the
American Revolution. The Portsmouth Naval Yard helped to continue Kittery’s maritime history, being the first federal naval yard. The town’s amazing history is still very present today, staying intact throughout its many years in existence.
